The Old Fashioned is a much beloved classic cocktail. Who doesn't like an old fashioned!? It's so simple, but also easy to mess up.
If you choose a really great Bourbon, that's half the battle. Here are some of my favorites:
- Blanton's Bourbon (Kentucky) *mostly my fave because the bottle is gorgeous
- Basil Hayden's (Kentucky) *a classic
- Widow Jane (Brooklyn) *Like Bulleit for Brooklynites
- Hudson Baby Bourbon (NY) *small batch, 100% corn
I could go on and on! There are so many great Bourbons out there. NY State makes a lot of fantastic Bourbons that you should definitely check out if you haven't. An old fashioned just needs the right amount of sugar to bourbon ratio + good bourbon, and you're set.
2 oz Bourbon
1/2 tablespoon sugar
2 brandied cherries
1 orange peel or slice
2-3 dashes of bitters
Muddle 1 brandied cherry and orange with 1/2 tablespoon of sugar and bitters. Add bourbon & ice. Stir. Garnish with brandied cherry.
Also, if you've ever watched John Hamm make an old fashioned on that episode of Mad Men...he's doing it wrong. I don't know who the heck told him to do it that way.
